Hwy 71

Traffic Scenery Fun Road Condition Police

Description

Hwy 71 actually covers a significant part of Texas, but the section we're most concerned about is that part that runs from Bee Caves to Llano.  Once you get out of the Austin area this road becomes rather scenic, especially in the spring when the bluebonnets are out.  The closer you get to Llano the better the bluebonnets are, and the more rugged the scenery gets.

In recent years they have dropped the speed limits significantly between Bee Caves and Blanco County.  This wide, 2-lane stretch of highway has been dropped from 70mph to 55 and 60mph, and it is heavily patrolled in this area.  However, once you get to the county line the speed limit returns to 70mph all the way to Llano, however, there are still a fair number of highway patrol officers from time to time.

Once past the 281 interchange Hwy 71 becomes a 1 lane road, but there are many passing zones.  This is definitely not a backroad - it is a semi-major highway, but it is a great gateway to get you to some fantastic locations in the Hill Country and beyond.
